In Memoriam - H. Stewart Dunn, Jr.
PDFIn honor of H. Stewart Dunn, Jr., a service will be held Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
In lieu of cards or flowers, the family asks that a gift to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria or to the ACLU of Virginia (or your local chapter) can be made.
We at Ivins, Phillips and Barker mourn the loss of our partner H. Stewart Dunn, Jr., who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday evening at the age of 87. For nearly 60 years Stew advised our firm’s clients on tax, estate planning and corporate governance matters, particularly those relating to the inter-generational transfer of family owned companies. Stew was fiercely loyal to his clients, and his intellectual curiosity and penchant for debate made him an effective advocate for their interests. He leaves behind a legacy built on an unwavering commitment to his clients and to our firm. He was, as our managing partner Eric R. Fox put it, “one of the giants in our firm’s long history.”
In recent years Stew began to set aside more time for his non-Ivins activities, including service on the Board of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of the National Capital Area and the ACLU of Virginia, the Board of Trustees of the Historic Alexandria Foundation and the Alexandria Planning Commission. Nevertheless, we continued to see him in the office three days a week – almost invariably in a 3-piece suit. While we are shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of such a dynamic colleague, we also are profoundly grateful that Stew was able to remain active and fully engaged, even in the days immediately preceding his death.
Our thoughts are with Stew’s wife Loti, his sons Chris and Tim, and his extended family during this time. The family will have a small private service this week. Plans for a larger memorial service will be finalized within the coming weeks.
